What is a chapbook?

A chapbook is a book collectors’ name for a small pamphlet of popular tales, ballads, tracts and other writing that used to be sold by itinerant dealers or pedlars called chapmen. Now, chapbooks are having a revival. They are usually self-published in small quantities, and are considered collectors’ items.

What’s special about Orchard House chapbooks?

Gloria Hildebrandt writes, designs, prints and binds these chapbooks at Orchard House, using a combination of computer technology and antique bookbinding techniques. Each chapbook contains one or two original short stories, and is handmade, sewn in signature with cotton thread coated in beeswax, stamped, numbered and autographed.

Some chapbooks are suitable for children and some contain adult themes.
